Things you Should Not Say at a Job Interview

Avoid Negativity

Image of a man removing his tieWhen at a job interview, the last thing that you want to do is be negative. Being negative about yourself or about your previous company can potentially cause you to loose the job before you even had a chance to get it.

If you are asked about your previous company, you want to avoid negatively speaking about them, because this may cause a potential employer to believe that you would do the same thing about them. Employers are looking for loyal, long-term employees.

If they ask you a job interview question about your worst quality, you will want to make sure that you do not give a negative answer. Turn a potential negative into something positive that you are working toward or show them that you have worked past that weakness.

Don’t Talk about Being a Short-Term Employee

When a potential employer asks you a question about where you see yourself in 10 years, it is not a wise thing to say that you see yourself working for another company, or working for your own company. Even if this is what you see yourself doing, avoid saying it.

Employers are interested in employees that are going to be around for a long time. They want someone that will be worth their time and money training. If they thing that you are going to leave right away, they more than likely will not hire you. So it would be best to tell them that you see yourself working with this company and hopefully advancing in anyway possible.

If you are Asked about your Hobbies

Make sure that you don’t tell them something that is very over the top. Keep your hobbies low key or related to the job. So, if you are a skydiver it might be best to keep that to yourself. Your potential employer may see this as risky and potentially dangerous. Most employers would like to keep you around, but he or she may not want to employ you if they are afraid that you have a risky hobby. If you, on the other hand, mention that your hobbies are spending time with your family and book reviewing. Even the most stringent employer could find fault with that. Make sure to actually use your own hobbies; you do not want to be caught in a lie.

Liar, Liar

Never, under any circumstances, lie during a job interview. If you are hired, this can cause problems. There may have been a clause in the application that could lead to being terminated. Even if there is no clause in the application this may cause your employer to not trust you. Trust is a key ingredient to any relationship, especially a work relationship. So make sure to keep it truthful in all ways.

It’s a Hard Knock Life

If at a job interview you are asked why you are applying for this job, do not say that you need the money. Though this may be an honest answer you do not want your employer to think that the only reason that you are going to work for them is the money. Employers want to have a job interview with people who are passionate about the job. They want to have employees that WANT to work for them, not someone who has to work for them. Most of the time people who are working for the money will leave once the money they need is gotten, and the money that is used to train that person is lost.

Thank God I’m a Democrat

There are things that you should NEVER talk about in a job interview. Two of them are politics and religion. So, even if you know without a shadow of a doubt that the person you are interviewing with is a Christian Democrat, it is best to not talk about the upcoming election or your last church sermon. This can lead to disagreements, and you do not want to start off on the wrong foot.

Points to Keep In Mind:

  • Politics and religion are restricted topics
  • Do not tell employer you are there for the money
  • Do not lie
  • Trust is a key to any relationship
  • Stick with mild hobbies or job related hobbies
  • Don’t tell employer you want to work with another employer in 5 years
  • Don’t tell employer you want your own company in 3 years
  • Be a long term employee
  • Avoid negativity
