Resume Resources
Run don't walk to your closest library or bookstore
I'm not sure if you are like me, but when it comes to getting help on anything, especially important things like resume tips, I like to hold something in my hand. One book that I truly enjoy reading when it comes to resume writing is Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer by Susan Britton Whitcomb.
Susan's book shows you the resume as people assume is correct and Ms. Whitcomb then will show you where they went wrong and how to fix it. The reviews have been quoted as saying, “This book tripled my husband's income!”
I also enjoy the simplicity of the Dummies series of books. Resume's For Dummies by Joyce Lain Kennedy is a great book that will explain details to you in words that everyone can understand.
The tips in this book are for anything but Dummies! They have added the latest information dealing with the digital age, and why most generic templates don't work. So check this book out.
Software helps you write your resume
It's time to write your resume, you've read the online articles, you've picked up the books, and you've talked to your friends! Now what? Have you thought about the possibility of getting some resume software? WinWay Resume Deluxe is a great way to get some help from your friendly computer.
This software will walk you through creating a resume with a wizard and will help you make a chronological resume, a functional resume – or both. With an easy user interface and great ease of use, no wonder Top TenREVIEWS has given it a Gold Award.
For those who have been hit a little hard by the economy, you may be interested in trying freeware resume software. This software is something that has been written and the author is willing to share it with you for free.
Unfortunately with this type of software there is normally not as much customer service and the user interface is not normally as ‘pretty', they are functional. You can try websites like About.com who list quite a few freeware software links for resumes.
Other ways to get help writing your resume
There are other ways that you can get your resume written. You can search for freelance authors who reside online, or in your local community. Most of them will charge an hourly fee to create your resume.
You must make sure to have all of the information that they will need to create your resume when you approach them with your request. Remember that it is better to have and not need then to need and not have.
If you are currently going to college you can stop into the Career Center and they will help you draft your resume and cover letter at no charge. Most of the time alumni have the same benefit as the students that are currently attending. So contact your college and see if they are able to help.
If you are not in college you may want to stop by your local unemployment agency. They also have a resume assistance center. It would be a wise idea to stop by and talk to the employment assistance agent, and see if they have any workshops, or if a schedule is needed to come in to work on a resume.
Resume Resources to keep In Mind:
- Unemployment agency may be able to help with resume development
- Career Center at your college – current students and alumni
- Freelance authors either online or local
