Career Planning for a Job Overseas

Career Planning is a Must for a Job Out of the Country

Life is full of surprises. Just when you thought that all is ok, your boss calls you and asks that you move to head a new division of the company... in another country. And no matter how often you hear that 'going global' is the way to go, somehow you're career planning has never included leaving your country (at least for a while). However, don't snub the opportunity! Going overseas can be a great boost to your career development.

Working in a different country can contribute tremendously to the development of your career and personal life. You've already heard it said that traveling opens the mind right? Well, imagine being able to move to a different count and live and breathe its culture. But before you say yes to your boss and change your career plans overnight.

Working Overseas Considerations:

  • Do you REALLY like this new development in your career? Remember that if you move to another country, it's not a job you can just leave after 3 months. You might need to stay there for a year or so.

  • How does your family family feel about this change in your career? If you are moving to a different country, you need to ensure that ALL family members are happy or at least open minded about this change.

  • Are you going to be compensated appropriately? If you actually want this career change, don't just jump into it. Note that relocation carries many costs with it so it is best that you get a good financial package.
