Although many trumpet the advantages of working at home, work from home opportunities also come with several disadvantages. A work at home job may suit someone, but not everyone. There are crucial situations when an employee will not be able to work due to many distractions at home.

Home is essentially a family place. If you're working at home, your children might think that you're not really working and just staying at home to take care of them and manage the house. They may come and go in your working room whenever it suits them, demanding this and that. You might have to take 'too frequent' breaks to tend to the delivery man, answer phone calls, etc.

As a home-based employee, you have to establish a steady set of rules and arrangements at your home. You have no supervisors or managers who will the set the limits for you. You also have to make your family, especially your kids, understand that in spite of the fact that you're now staying at home, it doesn't mean that you're not working.

You have to weigh the pros and cons of working at home. Factors to consider:

Loss of social contact. Working at home means you can't have the companionship of your co-workers. You might feel the toll of isolation.

Resentment of family members. Because you need to concentrate on your work, you may have to ask your children to be quiet while they're at home. You need to explain the situation clearly, so they can understand.

Failure to fulfill household duties. It's so easy to keep on going when you're working at home that you may not be able to meet your household chores. You may neglect your duties to your children or spouse. Remember that one of the benefits of working at home is the flexibility of your working hours.
