Internships Matter to Employers

Internships may be more important for future employers than the grade average students earned in school. Teen jobs help teenagers gain practical experience and develop responsibility at a very young age. Employers look more favorably on applicants with relevant experiences during their younger years.

Internships - Starting Them Young

Hands-on training give students an idea of the operation of a workplace. On-the-job training also gives students the competitive edge when looking for a job. Student interns can look forward to more job offers and a higher starting salary once they've graduated.

You can start your internship by taking on part-time jobs. However, Uncle Sam specified rules and legal hours concerning the jobs available for teens:

  • 16-17 years old. No restrictions on the working hours for 16 year old teens and above.

  • 14-15 years old. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., only outside school hours except on Labor Day, June 1. 14-15 old teens can work until 9 p.m.

  • 13 years and younger. They can only baby-sit, deliver newspapers, or act and perform. Or they can be creative and start their own mini-business.

Of course, as teenagers, many jobs are not open to them such as construction jobs, any internship involving driving a vehicle, mining occupations, and others. However, there are many other jobs for teens that offer just the right amount of challenge (all that while earning too!). Jobs in offices, grocery stores, retail stores, restaurants, movie theaters, amusement parks, baseball parks, and gas stations can already be given to 14 and 15-year-old teens.
